Very, very little is actually known about the Afterdark. Legend has it that when the rift occurred 300 years ago, it was because a nightmare had been born in one of the two kingdoms... but no one knows if this is true. It could have just been a way to try to explain how such an evil creature as the dark lady Morena could have come into existence. There is no industry, no rhyme, no reason to the legion of the Afterdark. It is there for the soul purpose of destroying all light.
The Afterdark, with its main base located in a series of caves and tunnels far from Diurn and Noctos, is said to be infused with a strange, deep, dark magic that twists and changes any who are in contact with it for too long, unless the subject is sufficiently shielded. Once becoming part of the Afterdark, you can never go back to what you were, so thoroughly is your body infused with the dark magic. Accounts of black pegasi with wings of bone and leather and gryphons with tattered, smoky wings and ruby eyes, among other things, have been told by terrified travelers who lost their way trying to avoid passing through the equally dangerous wilds.
The Afterdark has some races that are natural only to it, as well, and none of them are actually truly natural. They thrive on the pitch black and worship no outside deity, instead seeing their dark lady as a goddess. They long to destroy the sun and moon to plunge the world into eternal black.
